Are we allowed to pray behind those who hold a deviant creed?
We should always base on Islam on the agreed upon mujtahids that have handed down this religion from the Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam. They are the true inheritors of this deen and anything alien to their learned positions should be outright rejected. We need to be extra careful about people who speak from their own opinion, especially when they do not refer back to any classical scholarship. It does not matter how many people call them a scholar, shaykh, or mufti, they still need to refer back to the people of authority that are higher in rank than them. If they fail to do so, they are not worth their weight in salt and a merely talking a load of banter without any religious authority.
The position of Imaamate and who is deemed worthy of leading the Salah has been made clear in the most classical books on fiqh.
Hanafi madh-hab
Islam is a general condition. Therefore, the one who rejects the judgement day, or the Khalifate of Abu Bakr or the Prophet’s companions, radiy Allahu ‘anhum, or curses or swears at Abu Bakr and Umar, or rejects the intercession of the Prophet, sal Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam, and examples as such, then his position as an Imaam is invalid – Noor ul-Idah, page 172
Maliki Madh-hab
Qadi Iyad in his foundations of Islam stipulates that it is disliked that the Imaam should be a desert ‘Arab [i.e. a Najdi], or being a man of bid’ah. – Qadi Iyad, Foundations of Islam, p. 48
Furthermore, the Imaam must not be one of deviated ‘aqeedah [creed], which has two levels:
1. If the scholars do not agree as to whether his beliefs constitute kufr , the follower should repeat the salah in the ikhiyari time, and one should not take him as an imam
2. If his kufr is clear, all salah behind him are invalid and must be repeated
p.85, al-Mushid al-Muin, translated by Shaykh ‘Ali Laraki
